Curiosity

We believe that leadership requires curiosity about the future, a willingness to ask tough questions, and a commitment to situational awareness and understanding. We aspire to be curious in the work that we do; and to inspire curiosity about effective diabetes awareness, prevention, and care in others.

Our Story

The Belize Diabetes Association, a registered legal entity, was formed in 1991 by a group of Belizeans who became very concerned about the unabated prevalence of diabetes in Belize. We are a nonprofit, non-governmental organization driven by the charitable purpose and desire to enhance diabetes awareness, prevention, and care in Belize.

We are the national organization that represents the growing number of persons living with or at risk of diabetes in Belize. We work in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, other government and non-governmental organizations and institutions, health professionals, researchers, grassroots organizations, as well as local, regional, and international communities who share our purpose-driven cause.

The Belize Diabetes Association is governed by a constitution and is led by a team of elected members who are joined by three honorary advisors (legal, medical, and youth) to form the executive committee that serves for a three-year term. The executive council consists of all volunteers and is supported by a paid full-time office administrator, a paid office assistant, and a host of other volunteers in various aspects and capacities.

The Belize Diabetes Association is a proud member of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and we are super delighted with the fact that one of our members is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the IDF in the capacity of Vice-President - Strategic Governance.

Healthy Choices for Healthy Living

Our Vision

The Belize Diabetes Association's vision is a healthier Belize, a Belize that is free from the human, social, and economic burdens of diabetes.

Our Mission

The Belize Diabetes Association's mission is to lead the nation in diabetes awareness, prevention, and care.

Our Guiding principle

People First, the Belize Diabetes Association works toward a Belize that is free from the human, social, and economic burdens of diabetes. We care deeply about the effects of diabetes on Belizean people and therefore strive to neutralize the impact of diabetes on those living with, and those at risk of diabetes in Belize, as well as their caregivers and supporters. We put people first.

Our culture and core values

The Belize Diabetes Association's work is grounded in the genuine and fundamental belief that diabetes awareness, prevention, and care are critical to our nation's well-being. This belief pivots on the fact that healthy people are the foundation for healthy economies. Our executive committee members serve out of loyalty and responsibility to the association’s purpose and provide essential oversight and accountability to our beneficiaries, donors, and the broader Belizean public. In carrying out our mission, the Belize Diabetes Association embraces the following core nonprofit values which people should always expect and experience when they connect and interact with the Belize Diabetes Association at any level:

Collaboration

We believe in the value of working with others and achieving together what may not be possible alone. We aspire to bring a collaborative spirit and strategy to all that we do, learning from the insights and leadership of others, and sharing openly what others may be able to learn from us..

Courage
Inclusiveness

We believe that leadership takes courage — a willingness to take risks in the pursuit of transformational change. We aspire to be courageous by speaking truth about issues of critical importance to diabetes awareness, prevention, and care, and by challenging our members, staff, and supporters to be bold and courageous as they work to expand the Belize Diabetes Association’s impact.

We believe that the battle against diabetes cause is enriched by the breadth of its scope within its social good purpose; and we believe that this social good purpose requires the Belize Diabetes Association to embrace diversity, inclusion, and equity in deep and transformative ways. We aspire to be inclusive in the ways that we engage and learn from members and supporters and to model our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity in all that we do.
