Our Strategic Aim

The Belize Diabetes Association's Strategic Aim is to reduce the incidence of diabetes in Belize by 20% by 2030. We intend to achieve this through aggressive public awareness and prevention campaigns, continuous monitoring and evaluation, a strong focus on sound financial management, best business practices, good governance, transparency, and accountability.

Our Sustainability

We recognize that success is not just on the financial balance sheet. Therefore, we are equally very much concerned about the ever-present human (people with diabetes), social (the respective communities), and environmental impacts of diabetes in Belize and will be guided by them in all our key decisions.

Funding is always a priority to secure, retain, and optimize opportunities. This includes grassroots community funding, government funding, as well as corporate, regional, and international support.

we will seek to embrace technology, new ways to deliver services and to realize the opportunities of eHealth, big data, digital fundraising, new media, and new approaches to measure and evaluate our programs and outcomes.

Our Strategic Priority Areas are:

1. Provide leadership for diabetes in Belize.

  • Develop the brand, voice, and cause.

  • Inspire advocacy to transform the lives of those living with or at risk of diabetes.

  • Listen, connect, and partner with those who share our cause of diabetes awareness, prevention, and care.

2. Prevent the increase of diabetes in Belize.

  • Encourage diabetes risk assessment and early detection efforts throughout the country.

  • Foster healthy workplaces, communities, and the environment.

  • Influence a National Diabetes Prevention Program.

3. Enhance the well-being of those living with diabetes in Belize.

  • Encourage choice, support, and self-care.

  • Influence individualized approach and proactive measures for different ages, stages, types, places, and cultures in Belize.

  • Assess and address the varied impacts of diabetes on people in Belize.

4. Influence research and shape a National Diabetes Strategy.

  • Foster a National Diabetes Desk Research Workgroup, Registry, and Secretariat.

  • Engage our political leaders and national universities to help set a National Diabetes Research Agenda.

  • Advocate for and assist in the formulation of a National Diabetes Strategy and Action Plan.

Our Strategic Objectives are:

1. Increase Awareness and Education.

  • Develop and implement educational programs to increase public awareness about diabetes prevention, management, and treatment.

  • Create campaigns to dispel myths and provide accurate information about diabetes.

  • Partner with schools, churches, workplaces, and community leaders to provide educational workshops and materials.

2. Enhance Access to Care and Support.

  • Establish and expand support groups for individuals living with diabetes and their families.

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to improve access to diabetes care and resources, especially in underserved communities.

  • Advocate for policies that ensure affordable and equitable access to diabetes medications and healthcare services.

3. Promote Research and Innovation.

  • Encourage and support research initiatives aimed at improving diabetes treatment and the quality of life for those living with the condition.

  • Foster collaborations between researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry partners to accelerate the development of innovative solutions.

  • Organize conferences, webinars, and workshops to disseminate the latest research findings and advancements in diabetes care..

4. Improve Diabetes Management and Outcomes.

  • Develop programs to help individuals with diabetes manage their condition effectively, including lifestyle management, nutrition, and exercise programs.

  • Implement initiatives to monitor and improve clinical outcomes for diabetes patients, such as reducing HbA1c levels and preventing complications..

  • Provide resources and tools for risk assessment and self-management, including mobile apps, educational materials, and telehealth services.

5. Advocate for Policy and System Changes.

  • Engage in advocacy efforts to influence public policy and legislation related to diabetes care, research funding, and public health initiatives.

  • Build coalitions with other health organizations and stakeholders to promote systemic changes that benefit people with diabetes.
